Lets discuss what an actual Activation Lock is. Activation Lock is a security feature on iPhones that prevents others from using your device if it's lost or stolen.
How it works
Activation Lock is automatically turned on when you set up Find My on your device. Apple stores your Apple ID on its activation servers and links it to your device.
What it does
To turn off Find My, erase your device, or reactivate your device, you'll need your Apple ID password or device passcode.
How to use it
If your device is lost or stolen, you can use the Find My app to:
Mark your device as lost to lock the screen with a passcode and display a custom message
Remotely erase your device
How to remove it
To remove Activation Lock before selling or giving away your iPhone, you can:
Go to Settings > [your name]
Scroll down and tap Sign Out
Enter your Apple Account password
Tap Turn Off
Erase all content and settings that contain personal information
If you've purchased an iPhone that's still associated with a previous owner's Apple ID, you can have them erase the device remotely and remove it from their iCloud account.
If you cannot get ahold of the previous owner or do not know who the previous owner of the iOS device is you can perform the iCloud Activation Unlock yourself! Simply follow our FREE online guide to removing iCloud Activation Lock HERE
